So, I was walking down the street the other day. I found a dollar. I put it in my pocket. I kept walking, found 3,576,978,365,897,123,567,789,9567 more and put them in my pocket. It then went home and read an article on golf that sounded something like: Golf is a sport in which players using many types of clubs including woods, irons, and putters, attempt to hit balls into each hole on a golf course in the lowest possible number of strokes. Golf is one of the few ball games that does not use a standardized playing area; rather, the game is played on golf "courses", each one of which has a unique design and typically consists of either 9 or 18 holes. Golf is defined in the Rules of Golf as "playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules" It is not known exactly how, nor where the first game of golf was played. The earliest known illustration of a recognisable precursor to golf is found in a ca. 1460 French prayer book from the Touraine known as La Duchesse de Bourgogne, after a former owner. It shows teams playing considerable distances to a grazed green with target stakes (the piquet) as goals, using a curved hockey-like one-piece wooden club (the crosse) for approach shots, and sophisticated putters (the mail), a paralellepiped with three nearly parallel sets of planes, to roll round wooden balls to the target. The use of a hole on ice as a target goal, is depicted in a French book of hours dated ca. 1480; and a hole on a green, in a Flemish prayer book, ca. 1505. The modern game of golf may have reached Scotland in the early 17th century, perhaps imported by Flemings as a favourite recreation. Golf spread from Scotland and has now become a worldwide game, with golf courses in the majority of affluent countries. Golf competition is generally played as stroke play, in which the individual with the lowest number of strokes is declared the winner, or as match play with the winner determined by whichever individual or team posts the lower score on the most individual holes during a complete round. Golf as a spectator sport has become increasingly popular, with several different levels of professional and amateur tours in many regions of the world. Players such as Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Lorena Ochoa and Anika Sorenstam have become well-recognized sports figures across the world. Sponsorship has also become a huge part of the game and players often earn more from their sponsorship contracts than they do from the game itself. This word may, in turn, be derived from the Dutch word kolf, meaning "bat", or "club", and the Dutch sport of the same name. The idea that “golf” is an acronym from "gentlemen only, ladies forbidden" is false—this is a folk etymology.[3] [edit] History Main article: History of golf The most accepted golf history theory is that golf (as practiced today) originated from Scotland in the 12th century, with shepherds knocking stones into rabbit holes in the place where the famous Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews now sits.[4] However, the origin of golf is unclear and open to debate. Scholars have claimed references to a form of golf from hieroglyphs found on stone tablets dating to ancient Egyptian Pharaohs. Chuiwan ("ch'ui" means hitting and "wan" means small ball in Chinese), a game consisting of driving a ball with a stick into holes in the ground, was first mentioned in Dōngxuān Records (Chinese: 東軒錄), a Chinese book of 11th century, and Chinese professor Ling Hongling of Lanzhou University claims that the game was brought to Europe by the Mongols in the 12th and 13th centuries.[5] A Dutch game was mentioned on 26 February 1297 in a city called Loenen aan de Vecht. Here they played a game with a stick and leather ball. Whoever hit the ball into a target several hundreds of meters away the most number of times, won. The Scottish game of goulf (variously spelled) was mentioned in two 15th centYou're right! It's only eight words. But, Willa, really, was calling me an idiot really necessary. I'm starting as a beginner in golf. I'm now in my 30's, and this good summer weather is making me think of getting involved in something physical, but not too strenuous. So, I went to the driving range for the first time in forever yesterday. I practiced my swing with a driver, and with time, started to get good, straight drives in. Now I have to look for advice that will make my swing and an eventual 9-hole game "good enough". Of course there a lots of websites out there, and I've already investigated many. I've also started shopping on-line and in stores for a beginner's gold club set (complete) that can get me by for a couple years while I improve my game. So do you all have any advice, tips, or references on playing the game and selecting equipment for an adult beginner golfer?P.S. - I do have a friend who is quite good and experienced teaching me on the range. So please, no answers worth 2 points that read "take lessons" unless you are specific with directions on where or who from to find good lessons from. moreResolved Question: I have a $100 gift certificate burning a hole im my pocket to a golf shop. What should I buy?
I am still in the early phases of my golf career (broke 100 twice). Should I dish out some of my own money for a nice driver? Buy a fairway wood? Buy a wedge? Buy a putter? All of my equipment is ok. I bought used equipment about a year ago that is name brand and previously highly rated. Chipping and putting are my biggest weakness but I have not practiced either too much. My game is not very long. Even when hitting well I am typically chipping for par. Any ideas? moreMore Golf Practice Equipment Results
