Open Question: ways to manufactor a product?

You are an inventor who enjoys working around the home, cleaning, cooking, and doing minor home repairs and remodeling. You have little financial skills and no management skills. You have a great idea for a new kind of home appliance that meets everyday consumer needs. Your net worth is not very high so you have no idea if you’ll be able to “fund” this start‐up. You know that currently there are similar products that meet the consumers’ needs, but those products are inherently dangerous. You know nothing about manufacturing other than that it costs lots of money to set up a plant. You are convinced that this new technology idea would be applicable in a wide range of other products. Your spouse, knowing how much time this venture will take away from family time, has asked you for an example of what you mean to make sure your idea isn’t some harebrained scheme. You mention the following as two similar ideas that were developed for one application but proved to have VERY widespread applications: a. The “clicker” was initially invented for use with TV’s, but now has widespread applications for a host of electronic applications, just like your technology could potentially do. b. The 3‐prong power cord for electrical appliances was invented for higher quality appliances. Lower quality appliances have a 2‐prong cord, which is a safety issue. Better quality power cords have the 3rd “ground” wire, so now it has widespread application, just like your technology could potentially do. You now need to make a manufacturing decision facing the firm in terms of how to manufacture the product you have three possible options: Establish manufacturing of all components and final assembly. Establish assembly only operation with components purchased from local vendors. Outsource the entire manufacturing operation to an offshore company. which one would be the better route to go and why? pros and cons please. thanks! more

Open Question: Should I get a credit card at age 23?

I'm thinking about getting a major credit card instead of a retail store credit card because I have heard that retail creditors don't negotiate well with customers. I have been watching CNBC a lot lately. I have a part-time job where I make about $500 a month and I want to increase my credit score. I plan on majoring in Business and Marketing Management Technology, and later on in my life I will finish my B.S. Degree in Biology. I want to have my own business in the Biology field. What will be my best move on increasing my credit score now while I'm in college? I have some student loans too and I have made payments on time so far. more

Please help with Spine Technology's Payroll software. I haven't been able to figure out how to use its Loan Management module. I have so far figured out that I need to create a record in the Loan Master. I have defined a variable d5 (used for deduction of EMI from the monthly salary) but haven't been able to get to show it in the deductions in the payslip even though I have set it to 'yes' for 'print in the payslip' in the column master. Please help. Other than that the software seems to be quite user friendly. Mozart66 more

Voting Question: Laid off, no work, no money, no food, what should I do?

Funny thing is, I'm a 2008 grad of Ohio University, with a bachelors of science in Industrial Technology and a minor in Business Management, I was laid off from my former job 3 months ago, have tried DESPERATELY to find any type of work through craigslist.com, monster.com, etc. I even have 2 staffing agencies looking for me. I can't even get a goddamn labor gig off of craigslist.com for $50 bucks! WTF?!?! I don't even have enough money to but a goddamn transportation pass for the "T" to go into town and throw my resume out at different places, whatever they may be. I need some work, or I'm going to lose my place in 1.5 weeks, and I'll be friggon hospitalized because I haven't eaten for 2 solid days because of the lack of food. FUCK MAN!!! I fuckin' hate this fucking economy right now, I'm so fuckin' tired of this shit, man! There are people coming into this country illegally and getting a 40 hour work week before a goddamn a 25 year old American male. I'm not lazy and bust my ass, especially if I'm doing something in the labor field, like construction - framing, roofing, drywalling, bricklaying - or landscaping, etc. My question is... is there anyone out there, that has any bright ideas, that's not in the same spot as me, and that won't tell me to try and make money online with some bullshit, commission based, MLM(multi-level marketing) scam?! If there is anyone, even with a connection in the Boston area, in which I'm in, that could give me the email address of some contractor or employer that you think might need someone. I've got an excellent resume and great references. Let me know people. Thanks for time and your answers, I appreciate it immensely. D.My attitude may seem a bit diminished, "mar c", but without throwing out my real personal hardships, I've been going through some very serious dilemmas these last 4 months, in which I'm not trying to say my life is any harder than anyone else's, but you can only fathom the unwelcoming occurrences, sometimes daily, that I go through. I'm thoroughly surprised I haven't lost my mind with the ridiculousness and metaphoric, thorns of life, I endure. more

Voting Question: Do you agree with Ezekiel Emanuel (Rahm's brother) that the Hippocratic Oath is inconvenient?

Ezekiel Emanuel sees the Hippocratic Oath as one factor driving "overuse" of medical care. He is a policy adviser in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Dr. Emanuel argues that "peer recognition goes to the most thorough and aggressive physicians." He has lamented that doctors regard the "Hippocratic Oath's admonition to 'use my power to help the patient to the best of my ability and judgment' as an imperative to do everything for the patient regardless of the cost or effects on others." Of course, that is what patients hope their doctor will do. But President Barack Obama is pledging to rein in the nation's health care spending. The framework for influencing your doctor's decisions was included in the stimulus package, also known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The legislation sets a goal that every individual's treatments will be recorded by computer, and your doctor will be guided by electronically delivered protocols on "appropriate" and "cost-effective" care. Heading the new system is Dr. David Blumenthal, a Harvard Medical School professor, named national coordinator of health information technology. His writings show he favors limits on how much health care people can get. "Government controls are a proven strategy for controlling health care expenditures," he argued in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in March 2001. Blumenthal conceded there are disadvantages: "Longer waits for elective procedures and reduced availability of new and expensive treatments and devices." Yet he called it "debatable" whether the faster care Americans currently have is worth the higher cost. Now that Blumenthal is in charge, he sees problems ahead. "If electronic health records are to save money," he writes, doctors will have to take "advantage of embedded clinical decision support" (a euphemism for computers instructing doctors what to do). "If requirements are set too high, many physicians and hospitals will rebel — petitioning Congress to change the law or just resigning themselves to . . . accepting penalties," he wrote in NEJM early this month. To reduce spending, as President Obama promises, doctors will have to be pressured to deny care. Rand reported that Canada allows few cardiac procedures for patients age 65 and older. In critiquing the Hippocratic Oath, Dr. Emanuel calls for training medical students "to move toward more socially sustainable, cost-effective care." He says the trend "from 'do everything' to PALLATIVE CARE shows that change in physician norms is possible." Dr. Emanuel also cites medical comforts for pushing up costs: "Hospital rooms in the United States offer more privacy, comfort and auxiliary services than do hospital rooms in most other countries," he noted in the Journal of the American Medical Association last June. .Apparently there is no limit on proverbial Wicked Sons per household.Cosmo do you understand the implications of this in context of agenda supported for over a century by major Obama backers? This is not about making life better for more people. It is about there being fewer people. We must look behind the sales tactics!Betelgeuse maybe so but not with these guys.from one telling article: "When Rahm was 14, his parents adopted a newborn girl after the baby’s mother showed up at the hospital where Dr. Emanuel worked as head of pediatrics, wanting to give the girl away. The sister "has not had the sterling success of her brothers" [article-writer's words]. "Zeke says all three....now have an “episodic” relationship with her, and he wonders about the *genesis* of her life’s troubles: “It’s a good question as to how much is environment, following three such brothers, and how much is *genetic*. "It’s hard to know.” more

Voting Question: Career Advice... IT or Procurement?

OK experts... I could really use some outside perspective here. Here's my background, BS in Social Sciences/Geography (poor gpa), MA in International Relations (awesome gpa). Along with the poor undergraduate gpa, another ding in my background is that I was discharged from the Navy after a week in basic (which prevents most federal employment, security clearances). Spent the last two years doing IT desktop support for a State Agency's Central Office (Corrections). There, I have developed a career interest in procurement, be it IT procurement or some other form of purchasing, contract management, etc. It's an OK job, but no career progression as i'm a contractor. Ideally, I would like to make the move to procurement asap, but my lack of experience in the field is hurting me. I am considering going back for a second masters... either a Masters in Management Information Technology or a Masters in Acquisitions and Contract Management. Basically, i'm torn between using my IT experience and trying to launch an IT management career, or continuing on my quest for Procurement (preferable). I can write well, and i'm interested in learning languages (my true passion, but i've got a family to feed and not enough time to master a few well enough to make a career out of it). If I do make it into a purchasing-type career, i'm going to fight my way into a solid MBA program. That being said, i'm trying to keep sharp on my quantitative skills. Anyways, there seem to be so many variables, and with a solid year of unsuccessful job hunting (thank you economy), i'm reaching out for ideas/advice. I'll be happy to expand on any topic... i'm at your mercy!!! Thanks for your time. more

Resolved Question: Finding a job in Boston?

Well I have exhausted every effort I can think of searching for a job in Boston - where I currently reside - and have stretched my arm out to every resource and network I have, including monster.com, bostonrecruiter.com, craigslist.com, 2 different staffing agencies, friends, family, random people I meet at public places, as a "walk-in", etc. I'm a 2008 grad of Ohio University with a B.S. in Industrial Technology with a focus on Manufacturing Information Technology and a minor in Business Management. I don't necessarily want to work in that career field, but I will take what I can get. I would like to go back to school for my Masters in another field. For now, I cannot seem to grasp any real job leads, and when and if I do, they are already taken or responded to by the hundreds/thousands of unemployed citizens of Boston metro. Even labor/bartending/hospitality/construction/concierge/landscaping opportunities are either taken already, or they have so many applicants that have replied, they can be "choosy" on whom they want to employ. I know that there are unemployed people out there with their Masters and even Doctorates looking for work, even labor jobs, just to pay the bills. My question is, is there anyone, ANYONE, that may have somewhat of a job lead for this individual? It's pretty bold and drastic to ask such a question on here, and I don't want to sound "desperate", but let's face it, I am, and so are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Americans. Here's my resume and skills. Let me know what you think, thanks everyone. Resolved Question: The Reason The Chicken Croosed The Road Depends On Who You Ask. Please Please star if you like.?

KINDERGARTEN TEACHER: To get to the other side. PLATO: For the greater good ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross roads. KARL MARX: It was a historical inevitability. TIMOTHY LEARY: Because that's the only trip the establishment would let it take. SADDAM HUSSEIN: This was an unprovoked act of rebellion and we were quite justified in dropping 50 tons of nerve gas on it. RONALD REAGAN I forget. CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK; To boldly go where no chicken has gone before. HIPPOCRATES; Because of an excess of phlegm in its pancreas. ANDERSEN CONSULTING; Deregulation of the chicken's side of the road was threatening its dominant market position. The chicken was faced with significant challenges to create and develop the competencies required for the newly competitive market. Andersen Consulting, in a partnering relationship with the client, helped the chicken by rethinking its physical distribution strategy and implementation processes. Using the Poultry Integration Model (PIM) , Andersen helped the chicken use its skills, methodologies, knowledge, capital and experiences to align the chicken's people, processes and technology in support of its overall strategy within a Program Management framework. Andersen Consulting convened a diverse cross-spectrum of road analysts and best chickens along with Andersen consultants with deep skills in the transportation industry to engage in a two-day itinerary of meetings in order to leverage their personal knowledge capital, both tacit and explicit, and to enable them to synergize with each other in order to achieve the implicit goals in delivering and successfully architecting and implementing an enterprise-wide value framework across the continuum of poultry cross-median processes. The meeting was held in a park-like setting, enabling and creating an impactful environment which was strategically based, industry-focused, and built upon a consistent, clear, and unified market message and aligned with the chicken's mission, vision, and core values. This was conducive towards the creation of a total business integration solution. Andersen Consulting helped the chicken change to become more successful. LOUIS FARRAKHAN; The road, you see, represents the black man. The chicken "crossed " the black man in order to trample him and keep him down. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.; I envision a world where all chickens will be free to cross roads without having their motives called into question. MOSES; And God came down from the Heavens, and he said unto the chickens, "Thou shalt cross the road". And the chicken crossed the road, and there was much rejoicing. FOX MULDER; You saw it cross the road with your own eyes. How many more chickens have to cross the road before you believe it? RICHARD M. NIXON; The chicken did not cross the road. I repeat, the chicken did NOT cross the road. MACHIAVELLI; The point is that the chicken crosses the road. Who cares why? The end of crossing the road justifies whatever motive there was. JERRY SEINFELD; Why does anyone cross the road? I mean, why doesn't anyone ever think to ask, what the heck was this chicken doing walking around all over the place, anyway? FREUD; The fact that you are at all concerned that the chicken crossed the road reveals your underlying sexual insecurity. BILL GATES; I have just released the new Chicken Office 2000, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your check book. OLIVER STONE; The question is not, "Why did the chicken cross the road?" Rather, it is, "Who was crossing the road at the same time, whom we overlooked in our haste to observe the chicken crossing?" DARWIN; Chickens, over great periods of time, have been naturally selected in such a way that they are now genetically disposed to cross the roads. EINSTEIN; Whether the chicken crossed the road or the road moved beneath the chicken depends on your frame of reference. BUDDHA; Asking this question denies your own chicken nature. RALPH WALDO EMERSON; The chicken did not cross the road....it transcended it. ERNEST HEMINGWAY; To die. In the rain. COLONEL SANDERS; I can't believe I missed one. BUSH JUNIOR: The stupid chicken can't and I say can't cross the road, we will use any force necessary to not allow the chicken to cross the road, we will une new U.N. resolutions to stop the chicken from even thinking of crossing the road, like my father said: the chicken should not cross the road over my dead body, I swear that we will make the chicken look in AWE before trying to cross anything. more

Resolved Question: Guillermo's furniture store scenario?

Guillermo’s Furniture Store Scenario While many people know that Sonora, Mexico is a beautiful vacation spot, it is also a large furniture manufacturing location in North America. Guillermo Navallez made furniture for years near his Sonoran home. The area had a good supply of timber for the variety of tables and chairs produced by his company. Labor was also relatively inexpensive. In addition, he priced his handcrafted products at a slight premium for the quality they represented. Overall, life was good for Guillermo. All of that was true until late in the 1990s when two forces combined to cause a large dent in his business. First, a new competitor from overseas entered the furniture market. Using a high-tech approach, this foreign competition provided furniture to exact specifications and did so with rock-bottom prices. Second, the sleepy communities in Sonora woke up. One of the largest retailers in the nation’s headquarters was just a few miles down the road, and its influence had expanded considerably. With inexpensive housing, mild weather, beautiful scenery, un-congested roads, a new International Airport, and plenty of development, an influx of people and jobs raised the cost of labor substantially. Guillermo watched his profit margins shrink as prices fell and costs rose. After doing some research on his competition to see how they are handling these changes, it is clear that many of them are consolidating into larger organizations by merger or acquisition. Being independent, Guillermo does not relish the idea of being acquired by a larger competitor and then retired as the new company squeezes every peso it could out of the overhead costs. Guillermo also is not looking to expand his management responsibilities by acquiring another organization either; that could affect his time with his family in ways that he will not enjoy. Guillermo then spent some time looking at the foreign competition and their high-tech solution. Essentially, their production utilizes a computer controlled laser lathe to produce exact cuts in the wood. Highly automated, the plant in Norway uses very little labor as robots even perform the precise movement and assembly functions. The cost of the technology is immense, as is the reduction in the labor needed for production. In addition, the production can move between products quickly, and it runs on a 24-hour basis, as the shift-differentials are more than offset by the reduction in labor. Converting his production to this model would be expensive, but he saw how he could also decrease dramatically his production costs. When talking to some of his distributors about their wants, he had another idea that appealed to him. A second competitor, currently operating only in Norway, has been looking for channels to distribute in North America. This second potential rival, however, did not operate furniture outlets favoring instead to rely on chain distributors. Perhaps Guillermo could coordinate his existing distributor network and essentially become a representative for this other manufacturer. While he may retain some of the high end custom work, he could move his company from primarily manufacturing to primarily distribution. Guillermo also has a patented process for creating a coating for his furniture. In producing this product, the process first creates a common flame-retardant, and upon further processing, the coating is complete and stain resistant. There is market for the flame retardant, but not as much of a market for the finished coating. There is another product that Guillermo could buy to apply to his furniture as well that would add the same amount of value for the furniture. # Read the Guillermo’s Furniture Store Scenario. # Write no more than a 700-word paper explaining the finance concepts found in the readings and how they relate to the context of the scenario. more

Resolved Question: Could you help my to correct my coursework? - grammatical mistakes and sentence structure? - part 3?

Hi:) I am writing my coursework and I need someone to correct my grammatical mistakes and sentence structure. Could you help me? I will be very appreciated if you could help me. Thank you. "Tesco as a business has a number of the different types of resources that it uses to perform efficiently. These resources can be divided in to four different areas: human, physical, technology, and financial. Human resources are the people that work for the organization, e.g. staff, management, etc. Physical resources are the plant and other assets that are used for by the business to generate profit. Employees and their skills are one of the most important resources for Tesco. Each business requires a unique blend of skills to be successfully. Tesco employs more than 380000 people in its businesses around the world. It is essential for Tesco to manage, coach, and develop their workforce as employees play the main role in achieving business’ objectives. Large organisations like Tesco may have hundreds of different teams working across the organisation. Managing and coordination of team resources is essential to met company targets and improve performance. Each employee within the business should have own role and exactly know own duties and responsibilities to operate more efficiently. To improve Tesco’s performance, the management of Tesco should plan their human resources for the future. For example, they can monitor their current employees’ skills and compare them with what will be needed in the near future. If they identify any lack in skills in Tesco, they can provide training to employees to fill them. I believe that it will be beneficial for Tesco as skills development will increase employees’ confidence." more
