Resolved Question: If US has equality, why is there a gender gap in health insurance?

Gender gap discovered in health insurance: Women pay more for individual plans:http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20081030/news_1n30insure.html According to the article: "Insurers say they have a sound reason for charging different premiums: Women ages 19 to 55 tend to cost more than men because they typically use more health care, especially in the childbearing years. But women still pay more than men for insurance that does not cover maternity care. In the individual market, maternity coverage may be offered as an optional benefit, or rider, for a hefty additional premium." Whats the difference in what women vs men have to pay for health coverage? According the article above: "The disparities are evident in premiums charged by major insurers like Humana, UnitedHealth, Aetna and Anthem, a unit of WellPoint; in prices quoted by eHealth, a leading online source of health insurance; and in rate tables published by state high-risk pools, which offer coverage to people who cannot obtain private insurance. Humana, for example, says its Portrait plan offers “ideal coverage for people who want benefits like those provided by big employers.” For a Portrait plan with a $2,500 deductible, a 30-year-old woman pays 31 percent more than a man of the same age in Denver or Chicago and 32 percent more in Tallahassee, Fla." Recent Economic affects on women: COBRA's High Cost Bites Into Jobless Safety Net, especially for women, who have to pay more for individual health insurance: http://www.womensenews.org/article.cfm?aid=4041 Research Study results: Nowhere to Turn: How the Individual Health Insurance Market Fails Women: http://action.nwlc.org/site/PageNavigator/nowheretoturn_Report So why the gender gap in health insurance, if equality is here in the US? I keep hearing how feminism isn't needed in the US or the West, we're all supposedly equal now. What gives?I don't have kids, never had them, and won't have them, so why do I have to pay higher health insurance rates-why don't I get the rates men do? So does this mean, based on your answers, that we can stop hearing about gender gaps in auto insurance rates that men pay, since this gender gap in health insurance rates doesn't matter? Ok, glad I won't have to hear about that ever again.FYI: Don't want any of these, and in the US, these are elective surgeries, meaning, they are not covered by a health insurance plan and the individual has to pay for all of this stuff themselves: breast augmentation and vaginal cosmetic surgeries (ewww). Never had a hysterectomy or a tubal hon-I"d look for any way to avoid both of those surgeries as well. I've had my tonsils out though, when I was 5. That is probably why I'm paying such high health insurance costs. more

Resolved Question: How can we get out of my husband's incredibly expensive workplace health insurance?

To make a long story not-so-short- we have Humana through my husband's place of work. Our rates have gone up HIDEOUSLY. They are taking $556 EVERY TWO WEEKS out of his paycheck. Yes, that's right- we are paying a little over $12,000 alone just in insurance this year. We had to accept to continue this plan because our 2 year old little girl has Epilepsy and she would not be covered under any other outside plans- at least not for a year- and it just so happens that this year alone is the worst year so far for her epilepsy as far has the price of her medications, neuro visits and increase in seizure activity. My husband is the only one working because I have to stay home with our daughter. This insurance takes MORE THAN HALF of his paycheck every two weeks. We are now at federal poverty level soley because of the insurance. When we contacted his employer HR person a week after enrollment to drop coverage- she told us we could not drop it because "Section 125 of our insurance contract states that we cannot because the insurance is pretaxed." The only way we could drop, as she said, was he would have to quit his job for another or..he would flat out have to die or have some other major event that would affect his status. If he left to go to another company- once again we have the issue with our daughter being a pre-existing condition. I have called at least 20 insurance companies and every single one has told me she could not be covered because she is high risk- plus the overall cost of her medication. We called the state health insurance board and we were told this type of plan is called a "Cafeteria" plan and sadly, it "screws" hundreds of thousands of people like us yearly. The person we talked to told us we would have to get a lawyer and pursue legal action if we wanted out of the contract. We are absolutely broke- we could never afford a lawsuit. There is no money for bills...nothing. Food is more important than bills- especially with a child- so we buy food instead while bill collectors call us non-stop. Can anyone please help us??? We can't even get our daughter on state insurance such as Medicaid because of the current insurance she has through her father's employer. Can we file a hardship- would that work on employers insurance? Can anyone help us at all? We are wanting out so that our daughter can get state health insurance or coverage through BCBS CoverKids Tennessee. As of now, we are told noone can be dropped off the plan at all. more

Resolved Question: How do I find the right INDIVIDUAL HEALTHCARE plan for me?

I'm a freelance journalist in Chicago and I need to buy an individual healthcare plan. I've looked into Humana and BlueCross, but neither offered entirely clear, concise and helpful information. If anything, the language they use on their respective sites paint a portrait of individual healthcare with broad strokes (i.e.: it sounds OK enough but it's not declarative enough to answer particular questions). So then... Where can I shop for an affordable, individual healthcare plan? Which companies are good? Which ones are not good for individual plans? Is there some way I can compare individual plans from different companies? As always, THANK YOU for your help! more

Resolved Question: Family looking for Family Health Care?

I am about to loose my employer provided health care and looking to purchase my own. I am looking for one with a low to no deductible plan that covers 2 adults and 2 children. We once had Humana (provided by our employer) that had no deductible before they changed provider to Anthem that has a $5000 deductible that we do not like at all for it was too much out of pocket spending each time we went to get care. Is there any affordable plans out there that are worthy? Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Moving to a new state, will my rate decrease?

I am looking to buy my own health insurance to start soon into the new year. If I buy a plan through Humana-One in Wisconsin at approximately $78/month and then move to Ohio where the same plan costs only $58/month will my rate be decreased when I relocate? The plan is portable and states you can keep your coverage when you move to another state. However, if I would be stuck paying $78/month because I paid my first month in Wisconsin, it doesn't seem worth it if I will be moving within a month to Ohio. At the same time I really don't want to be uninsured for any amount of time. more

Resolved Question: Why is it impossible for a Bipolar I diagnosed person to get health insurance?

I am a 26 year old, fully functioning, working, female adult who just happens to have a Bipolar I diagnosis that I got at the age of 21 while still in college. It so happens that I was on my parents healthcare until the age of 23, and then was uninsured. I have had several high paying jobs with group benefits since then, but I recently quit the last one to return home to help an ailing family member with a family business. Because it is a company of under 6 people, there is no group insurance plan. I have money and am proud that I earn my own wages. I have NO problems paying ridiculous amounts for health insurance, provided that they will cover prescriptions and everything but co-pays. My current insurance plan is crap and will not cover any psychiatric treatment, will only cover regular medical expenses (broken arm, stitches, etc) after I've paid $500 out of my own pocket, and no prescriptions. I have applied (and been denied) for health insurance already from: Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, United, and a couple of other major health insurance agencies. They all reject me immediately because of the Bipolar I diagnosis. I have appealed this rejection a few times because I have never been hospitalized as an inpatient, I have never hurt myself, etc. It seems very unfair to me that they randomly reject me without viewing my case file. My psychiatrist is even willing to write a letter on my behalf and I have had insurance agents personally appeal to underwriting, to no avail. I have had NO problems with my disorder since I've been medicated, which was December of 2003. Any suggestions here? I really need health insurance... at some point I'd like to have children, and nevermind the fact that I just want to be covered in case of emergency. Thanks! Some additional details: I *did* qualify for COBRA and paid it, the last payment they did not receive in the mail so they cancelled me. I appealed it several times and lost it. My state does have a high risk pool but I was told I did not qualify. Any more information on this is appreciated. I make too much money to qualify for Medicare or prescription assistance. Thanks! more

Voting Question: Ideas for how to qualify for medicare to pay for tooth extraction?

I'm 68 and so qualify for medicare and have supplemental coverage by Humana. An oral surgeon exam indicated I need to have one premolar tooth extracted. A premolar tooth is one of the chewing teeth (as opposed to the front teeth which are used to "bite off" food). I plan to have this tooth replaced by an implant. An x-ray also revealed that I have a impacted wisdom tooth (still below the gum line) that has decay. Since it's still below the gum line, I consider that an INTERNAL infection. The oral surgeon also said this tooth needs to come out. Is there possibly a better argument than "getting rid of an internal infection", to use in order to have this extraction covered by Medicare/Humana? It's my understanding medicare will pay for tooth extraction when it is "medically necessary". Chewing food is a part of eating; eating chewed food provides the body with what it needs to sustain life. Thus I consider the premolar extraction and replacement with an implant "medically necessary". Can you suggest a better argument that would be more likely to get the procedures covered by Medicare/Humana? Thanks in advance for your insights. Rich in Minnesota USA  more

Resolved Question: Healthcare claims - Managed care/Hospice how to bill?

This may be a long shot, but can anyone here explain how to get a Medicare replacement plan (such as Humana Gold Plus Managed Care plan) to pay a claim for a skilled stay at a nursing facility when Hospice is involved? I have no problem billing Medicare directly when someone has Hospice but is being treated for a non-hospice related illness...I just use a condition code 07, but I can NEVER get any of my Humana part A claims to pay in this situation unless I bill Humana, get a denial that says I have to bill medicare, bill medicare and get a denial saying the person has a managed care plan, and then bill humana over and over again. I've actually got close to $40k on my aging that's over 120 days old and I really need to get those claims paid!!!! Any help???They eventually pay...but not for 10-12 months. The EOBs from Humana always say "if diagnosis not related to terminal condition, bill Medicare directly." I know Medicare will not pay, because the member has Humana, but this is what Humana requires every single time. I'm just wondering if there's a way to let Humana know that this is a non-terminal diagnosis claim at the time I submit it. I use www.availity.com to submit my Humana claims, which isn't necessarily using a UB92 or UB04...is there a way to get the claim to pay the first time around if I use a UB04 with some specific condition code or something? I've had acne since my teens but it's really been bothering me lately psychologically and hurting alot when trying to sleep on my back from cysts. Also sometimes minor acne on my face has been causing permanent scars. I want to go to the dermatologist and see if I can get accutane, but I just got my health insurance beginning of the year and had no creditable coverage before that. According to their written policy, I might not be eligible since I actually went to the doctor and got antibiotics for acne less than 24 months before enrollment in the health plan. I would like to say that the condition manifested itself in the past month psychologically which caused me to seek out accutane, which is true. Should I even mention my past diagnosis can they check it somehow? I really don't want to pay $3000 out of pocket for accutane, but I feel I really need to do this now for my own well being. I have been trying to assist my grandmother in "disenrolling" from Humana's Rx drug coverage plan, as she DOES NOT TAKE any medication and has NEVER used the coverage. I was told today by "Alitza", who could hardly speak English, that it is impossible to disenroll unless it is during the annual "enrollment" period. Does this make any sense? She has paid premiums for months and NEVER used the coverage, and is being told she CANNOT drop the coverage and is RESPONSIBLE for paying the premiums until the next "enrollment" period (Nov. 15th thur Dec 31). Then she can "disenroll" during this "enrollment" period. BEWARE OF THESE PLANS, ESPECIALLY BEWARE OF HUMANA. more

Resolved Question: Does anyone have experience with the "new Medicare Rx Drug Plan"?

Last year I assisted my grandmother in signing up for Humana's Part D (optional) prescription drug plan. She is not (thankfully) taking any medication on a regular basis. We did this as a precaution, since she is close to 80, in case she did need rx coverage in the future. The plan was $28.00 per month. She paid this for 10 months. However, on her FIXED income of Social Security, this began to strain her budget, so she wrote Humana a letter saying she no longer wished to be covered by the plan, and she stopped paying the premium. 3 months later, Humana is now sending her a bill for the remaining 2 months service (to equal one year). Plus they are adding a "penalty" each month. She is now objecting to this on principle. When I helped her sign up, there was NO indication that this was MANDATORY for the entire year. They are now calling her and threatening to turn her over to a collection agency. Is this how the Rx drug plan is suppose to "help" our elderly??? Anyone have any ideas? more
